The Hunger Games, we know it to be a thrilling dystopian novel set in the very distorted future of America. Today, I am going to be talking to you about the characters of the Hunger Games.
Katniss Everdeen- This strong leading female is the book's main character and one of the most interesting. She is complex, and a young woman of many talents. But, when I read the first book, the impression I got from her, was that she was a born survivor and she knew that she was. Katniss was so complex, that when she began to think back in her life, it had me on the edge of my seat, hungry to know more about this closed book. As the games began, I had to stop reading and calm my nerves because I was so excited to read about Katniss' struggle in these games. And I have to say, although I watched the movie, I was still thoroughly surprised with many of the life changing plot twists. Including Rue's death, which caused me to cry for quite a while. Suzanne Collins captured the essence of mysterious and put it in the horrific yet thrilling survival of this character. I enjoyed the book and being in the mind, of our strong huntress, Katniss Everdeen.
Peeta Mellark- I have to admit, this young man managed to look as innocent as he did, but he had a fighting will captured in him. It was shocking to me, that Katniss had not rushed to help him right away, because it seems like she had a thing for helping those who seem weak. I appreciated Peeta's character, because he still caught my eye, when it came to the Games. Like I mentioned above, even though I watched the movie, I was still surprised with these events. One of these events, would be Peeta teaming up with the Careers once he was in the Games. I felt like Peeta was a traitor, up until the point when he saved Katniss from Cato after the Tracker Jacker Bees stung her. And Peeta knew that he would suffer for helping the girl he loved, yet he did it anyways. Katniss did return the favor when he became sick, from Cato's sword cut that nearly killed him.
Cinna- Katniss' Capitol Stylist, was a shockingly humble and loving character. When first introduced, I expected him to be like the residents of the Capitol who were anything but humble and caring. But he peaked my interest, because he wanted to be different from his fellow Capitol residents. The dress he designed for Katniss was as stunning as the advice he provided for her. Here is another character, that Suzanne Collins really went all the way with. I love it!
Rue- When I typed her name, a wave of sadness came over me. This young girl from District 11, was one resourceful, yet innocent young girl. As a matter of a fact, when I read about her being able to climb trees, I smiled a little inside, because I knew that she had a fighting chance to win the Hunger Games. But I forgot, how fragile she was, and it was still a shock to me, when she died. And I felt Katniss' pain for weeks, after I finished the book. I think, that Suzanne Collins, once again, really poured her heart and soul into Rue's death, and that is why readers everywhere mourned over the child's death.
Cato- I can easily describe what I feel for this character: Hate. And I love it! It means to me, that Suzanne Collins really spent her time, thinking and plotting everything Cato did and said. I hated Cato, even when the Muttations killed him. All I could think, was: 'This is what he deserves'. Call it what you like, but even in death, Cato was still one of my most hated characters.
Foxface- I was upset when I read about Foxface's superior skills, because in many ways she was more skilled than Katniss. Even after finishing the book, I am eager to know Foxface's real name. To me, it was unfair that Foxface died of something so simple and obvious, rather than dying at the hands of another tribute. Still, Foxface will remain one of the largest mysteries of the Hunger Games.
Thresh- This particular tribute was strange to me. The entire Game, he was rarely heard of even though he was one of the biggest threats to worry about Tribute wise. He was smarter than I expected him to be, which was my mistake. I assumed, that because he had more brawn, that he had less brains. That ended up being my mistake, because as the book marched on, I realized that Thresh was smarter than I knew. When he saved Katniss' life for Rue, I thought that it made him a better person and that he had a heart. So it made it even worse, when Thresh was killed by Cato.
Glimmer- There isn't much to say about this Career, except that she wasn't prepared for the Games. It seems as though she wasn't skilled in any weapon, and she didn't really know that much. She had the body of a teen, but the mind of a child. When the Tracker Jackers were dropped on her, she didn't know what to do, and was therefor killed.
Effie Trinket- This character, is almost an open book. Effie, was very fun to read about, being in her space was a very interesting experience. She managed to be supporting both Katniss and Peeta, while giving very valuable advice. By far, Effie is one of my favorite characters. Because she sacrifices, and cares.
Haymitch Abernathy- The drunk mentor we grew to know and love, Haymitch. When he was first introduced, I assumed that Haymitch would be no help to Katniss or Peeta, but when they got in the Games, Haymitch began to prove his worth. By sending medicine, and other goodies, Haymitch helped his Tributes which proved to readers, that he cared. I would love to see a series done about Haymitch's experience in the Hunger Games. What made him into the Haymitch we know today? Why is he the Haymitch we know and love?
Gale Hawthorne- I have little words for this character. I do like his strength and soldier attitude. He was amazing to me when he was still around, but when the Games began, I didn't know what to think of him and Katniss as I grew much closer to the idea of Peeta and Katniss' love.
Primrose Everdeen- I love this character, because she is amazing! In my opinion, this young girl is so skilled in medicine and love, that she is almost better than Katniss... almost. Her heart was a big as the universe, and her way with plants is what helped her be such a wonderful character. She cared about everyone, no matter who it was. She was young, and innocent. Once again, Suzanne Collins managed to capture the essence of love in the little body of this character.
The Hunger Games, is one of the many books that has captured my crazy fangirl heart. I appreciate Suzanne Collins and I hope that she never changes a thing about her writing style because as far as I am concerned, it is nearly flawless! If you haven't already read it, read the Hunger Games and tell me what you think about it.
I hope that you enjoyed my review on the first book of the Hunger Games trilogy, stay tuned for Catching Fire book review.
